When I was going through a very emotional and stressful period in my life my aunt called and told me to come see her. She had me sit down on a chair, asked me to tell my story, and started performing the NADA protocol on me. Within seconds I was knocked out.
What is NADA?
NADA stands for National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. Developed in the South Bronx Lincoln Recovery Center, the NADA protocol focuses on 5 ear-points. The protocol was originally developed to treat addiction; but practitioners also discovered that the NADA protocol had several other benefits to behavioral health in treating mental health (anxiety disorders and depression symptoms), as well as disaster and emotional trauma.
What is the protocol?
Borrowed from the NADA website, the NADA protocol is a 30 - 45 minute treatment where practitioners “apply up to 5 fine-gauge, sterilized, on-time use stainless steel needles just under the skin at designated points in each ear. The procedure functions as an adjunct within a comprehensive treatment program that offers other therapeutic elements including counseling, education, family involvement, mutual support group involvement, and supportive medical health care. Clients in all types of treatment settings including inpatient, outpatient, incarcerated, shelters, harm reduction and street outreach can utilize this treatment. Among the benefits reported by both clients and clinicians are improved program retention, a more optimistic and cooperative attitude toward the process of recovery, as well as reductions in cravings, anxiety, sleep disturbance and need for pharmaceuticals. The NADA protocol is also commonly referred to as: acudetox, acupuncture detoxification, five point ear acupuncture protocol, five point protocol, 5NP.”
NADA and Anxiety
Under the NADA protocol, which I adhered to for quite some time, I noticed many things that were improving; particularly, it helped reduce my anxiety and helped me sleep so much better at night. After doing NADA I was an acupuncture convert. I felt the effects of it myself and I swore by improving my own state of health and well-being through this modality.
What makes the NADA protocol effective for symptoms of anxiety is the sympathetic (fight or flight) point that it triggers. On top of that it also throws a punch at your kidney (fear) and liver (anger) points - all associated with strong emotions.
After treatment, clients have reported that NADA has also helped improve their blood pressure and promote better blood circulation. In fact, when I was training to become a certified AcuDetox Specialist with NADA, I had a client come to me with a stiff shoulder and after 30 minutes of treatment? Her somatic symptoms were gone.
NADA and Energy Flow
I guess what makes the NADA protocol so much more interesting for me isn’t just the fact that it is healing our physical symptoms, but our psychoemotional ones as well. As acupuncture has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the NADA protocol encourages clients to feel the flow of energy through their body during treatment, as well as after.
Energy points are triggered during the treatment that may activate psychoemotional areas that may be blocked. In my own experience, the NADA protocol helped me deal and sift through my heartache as I slept - everything would come to me as “detox dreams”.
Amazing what 5 needles can do to really shift your energy.
